Learning Unit #13

Activity #1:

Use three programs to create flash movies and embed them into your freewebs page, facebook page or on Ning. The three websites we used are:

http://animoto.com

http://www.toufee.com

http://sproutbuilder.com

You can find my work on my freewebs site at: http://djhazimihalis.webs.com

After I embeded these flash movies onto my freebs page, the site loaded very slow. Sometimes they worked sometimes they didn’t. The animoto one worked all the time, but the other two took awhile to load. The toufee and sproutbuilder sites were good but I need more practice to use their full capabilities. The animoto site was very good. I will probably use that one in the future.

Activity #2:

Choose some topic and create a Screencast. I used the Jing Project program. I chose to embed this screencast to distribute it. The web address is

http://www.screencast.com/users/DHazimihalis/folders/Jing/media/c86c00a7-df31-4ad0-8114-95a1a6d9a668

This program was a little tricky to use at first. I just kept capturing my desktop screen. I then opened some photos, picked one and captured that screen. I had a hard time adding any text to the photo so I didn’t.

Activity #3

My username at seesmic is dhazimihalis. My video Profile on Seesmic:

http://seesmic.com/v/9jJ2I5NfkF

My reply to Dr. Alam’s Video Support LU 12:

http://seesmic.com/v/WMSEQ6Y6d2

I apologize for the poor lighting of the video. When I turn on the lights in that room, it is too bright on the screen. Also, my videos are not that long. It seems that once I plugged in my camcorder and went to the page to record my profile and response, the timer for that video started even though I did not start recording. Also in my response, my audio skipped for a brief moment. I have no idea why it did that but it did.

Activity #4

Sign up for voice thread. Create a group voicethread. Comment on Dr. Alam’s voicethread.

Group Voicethread is located at:

Learning Unit #12

Activity #1 – High Definition Videos

View some high defintion videos from Microsfoft and Apple web sites.

Microsoft videos:

720p-http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/9/20907788-993F-4EF6-8D75-F0DD93207FB8/AdrenalineRush_720.exe

1080p – http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/9/d/09d051c4-decc-4d39-9c57-f520187213a1/Amazing_Caves_1080.exe

Apple Video

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/kingdomofheaven.html

Activity #2 – Video Recording

I used a Sony Digital 8 camcorder to create a short video of myself. After a couple of tries, I got my recording under two minutes. I then used MS Movie Maker and edited what I recorded. I added a title and a credit line to the video. I then uploaded this video onto Youtube. I found that Youtube was the easiest option for this assignment. The web address for my video can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAD-tRA9ADk

Acitvity #3 – Live Recording

I did a live recording on ustream.tv. The reason I chose this site was because it was easy to post a live feed straight from my camcorder. The instructions were easy to follow and it didn’t take long to record a live video. The only way anyone can view the video is by downloading Adobe Player 9. The download was fast. I like the fact that the site gives you the option to start a live braodcast or you can start recording. The web address for my live recording is http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/380416

Activity #4 – Free Video Conferencing

We have already used Yugma, now we are asked to try WizIQ and Flashmeeting. I registered for the WizIQ site and joined Dr. Alam on it. My URL for the WizIq site is

http://www.wiziq.com/member-profile/31230-Dimitrios-Hazimihalis

Acitvity #5 – Sign up for Seesmic

I signed up for seesmic and joined Dr. Alam and other classmates on that site. My user name for the seesmic site is dhazimihalis.

Learning Unit #11

This learning unit consists of image manipulation in the form of creating slide shows and sharing them with wider audiences for the purpose of professional presentations. Also, the addition of voice to presentations through recorded sound files or by creating sound through a text to speech conversion software.

Task #1

Use two websites to pick one panoramic view. Post them on wordpress and stumble upon sites. The sites are:

http://www.virtualparks.org/

http://www.panoramas.dk/

The two views from these sites are:

http://www.virtualparks.org/scenes/ZuIxKLM56woDC6XqN3i-k3w.html

http://www.panoramas.dk/fullscreen7/f44-Krakow-all-saints-day.html

Task #2

Create a slide presentation using MS Power Point about “Social Bookmarking”. Sign up at http://www.slideshare.net and upload the presentation. The presentation is located on:

http://www.slideshare.net/dhazimihalis/social-bookmarking-358870/

The upload took some time. I do not like the fact that the animations would not upload on this site.

Task #3

The Slideshare web site allows to create Slidecasts. Create a slide cast of the presentation in Task #2 with sound.

The slidecast did not work so I used the Articulate trial program that was suggested to complete and publish this assignment. I used Power Point 2007 to create my presentation and saved it as a 1997-2003 document. The Articulate tutorial was very helpful and easy to use. I followed the instructions to prepare a presentation and added sound to the presentation. Then I published the presentation to my computer. I then had to upload files onto my freewebs site as was suggested on the ning site for this learning unit. This was difficult because I had to upload all of the files as a single file upload which took some time. Once I was finished I added a new page to my personal site and linked the presentation. The presentation is located at:

http://djhazimihalis.webs.com/Social%20Bookmarking/player.html

This learning unit was very helpful with learning how to effectively use and publish PowerPoint presentations. I am working on a research paper on Corrosion Engineering and this will no doubt assist me with that presentation.

Learning Unit #9

Task #1:

  1. Google Calendar – This site was very easy to use. I like the simplicity of setting up events. This site makes it very easy to view and use from other websites.
  2. MyOffice on Facebook – Similar to Google calendar. Simple. Adding events is easy. I like the comments section and the easy invite section. I also like the tabs to choose what you want to do.
  3. ZOHO Project – This is probably the best site of the group as far as project management is concerned. Very detailed. However, once the group was set up by our group administrator, I couldn’t add or edit since I was listed as a manager on that site. I am hoping that with a little more practice, I can use this program at work.
  4. Yugma – This is a good website. Good graphics. Somewhat easy to use. I like the fact that we can schedule meetings up to six months in advance. I like that meetings can be scheduled on this format in real time. This program can be useful when it is difficult to set up “face to face” meetings. I need to practice with this more to fully realize its potential.

My Google calendar: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=jjhaz0103%40gmail.com&ctz=America/New_York&pvttk=ad4e7a9d39af3a81b81cd7b00d802894

Task #2:

Below is a list of websites for this task.

http://djhazimihalis.webs.com – On this site I have included a photo of two boxers that I have edited. I used Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album to crop and fix the lighting in the photo.

Group #2 Link:  http://sites.google.com/e/student.ysu.edu/info-tech-tools-group-2/Home

The program I will probably use is the MS Word 2003/2007. The reason I am going to use this is because this is what my company uses. (Although we are still using Word 97 in my office). I will also try to use the ZOHO program for my personal use.

Facebook, ning, LinkedIn, pownce and friendfeed are all free social networking sites. These sites allow you to share just about anything. Below is a brief description of each site.

Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet. Facebook is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, or school. Join the networks that reflect your real-life communities to learn more about the people who work, live, or study around you. Facebook’s Platform enables anyone, anywhere, to build complete applications that you can choose to use. The possibilities are endless. Define your experience on Facebook by choosing applications that are useful and relevant to your world.

LinkedIn is an onlinWhen you join, you create a profile that summarizes your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps you find and be found by former colleagues, clients, and partners. You can add more connections by inviting trusted contacts to join LinkedIn and connect to you.e network of more than 20 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 150 industries. Your network consists of your connections, your connections’ connections, and the people they know, linking you to thousands of qualified professionals. Through your network you can:

Find potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners who come recommended
* Be found for business opportunities
* Search for great jobs
* Discover inside connections that can help you land jobs and close deals
* Post and distribute job listings
* Find high-quality passive candidates

Pownce is a social networking site that is described to send stuff to your friends. The things that you can send are music, photos, messages, links, events, and more.

FriendFeed enables you to keep up-to-date on the web pages, photos, videos and music that your friends and family are sharing. It offers a unique way to discover and discuss information among friends. The goal of FriendFeed is to make content on the Web more relevant and useful for you by using your existing social network as a tool for discovering interesting information. You get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared — from news articles to family photos to interesting links and videos. And your friends get their customized feeds, full of the cool stuff that you’ve shared.

Ning is another social networking site that we are currently using for our ENGR 6923 Information Technology Tools for Engineers. Forums, groups, gadgets, blogs can all be created from this site.

All of these sites are comparable. The differences are mostly in graphics and page style setup. There are numerous things that can be added and linked to each of these sites.

The choice of social networking program that I will use is LinkedIn. This site is a professional website and I believe will be useful for networking for business and other professional activities. Sometimes it is difficult to find new opportunities in my field. I believe that by using this program I will see what direction Civil Engineering is going in order to maximize my education and experience.

This learning unit dealt with information content creation, sharing and publishing along with an introduction to social networking through the web site facebook. The unit also dealt with Google and its collaborative tools. The unit describes some background information on client server methodology. It also discusses how to create documents for online publishing, group collaboration tools and social networking by reviewing a couple of books and other online material. The information was extensive and after some practice I believe that one can effectively create web pages and share just about any information that anyone could want. The social networking tools are also pretty cool to work use for networking.

Blogs

I am currently taking a Master’s Degree Course in Civil Engineering. This course is Using information Tech Tools for Engineers.

A BLOG is a publication of personal thoughts, experiences, and web links. It is updated frequently and is usually a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the web or in the media. This medium is gaining popularity and thousands of people use blogging services such as Word Press, Blogger and typepad. Alternatively, some web hosting providers include easy to use blogging software that can be customized and integrated within your own website.
